495px-MKGandhi Mahatma Gandhi, born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, a coastal city in the Indian state of Gujarat. During his employed as a lawyer in South Africa, he pioneered the concept of satyagraha, the resistance to tyranny through mass civil disobedience, a philosophy firmly founded upon ahimsa, or total nonviolence. This concept helped India to gain independence, and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. His role in the bloodless revolution earned him the title of Father of the Nation (of India) and his birthday, 2 October is commemorated as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday in India, and worldwide as the International Day of Non-Violence.

Time.com in its publication of “Top 25 Political Icons” on February 4, 2011 placed Mahatma Gandhi as on of its chosen political icon. Several popular and admirable characters such as Alexander the Great, Mao Zedong, Winston Churchill, Genghis Khan, Nelson Mandela, Abraham Lincoln and also Adolf Hitler are amongst the list.
